Yokozuna loses after capturing Spring title

Tochiazuma pushed out yokozuna (grand champion) Musashimaru on the final day of the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament at Osaka, Japan, today, but it didn't matter.
Musashimaru (Wai'anae's Fiamalu Penitani) clinched his 10th Emperor's Cup yesterday by beating Chiyotaikai. He finished the tournament 13-2.
Ozeki (champion) Kaio (12-3) won today in a walkover over Kotomitsuki (broken jaw) to finish second.
Chiyotaikai, the other ozeki finished 7-8 after losing to Musoyama.

TRACK AND FIELD
UH's West wins: University of Hawai'i's Alethe West won the 1,500-meter run at the Northridge (Calif.) Invitational yesterday.
West, a sophomore from Cobram, Victoria, Australia, finished in four minutes, 32.80 seconds. Hawai'i's Casey McGuire-Turcotte was third in 4:40.41. UH's Cheryl Smith was scratched from the race.
The UH women also won the distance medley relay in 12:16.43 and the 4x800 relay in 9:16.87.
GIRLS WRESTLING
7 to semifinals: Seven of the 24 members of Team Hawai'i reached the championship semifinals yesterday at the U.S. Girls Wrestling Association High School National Championships at Lake Orion, Mich.
Ten others are alive in the consolation bracket.
Winning their quarterfinal matches were:
105 pounds: Melissa Orden of McKinley and Shanel Vivas of Kahuku; 114: Melissa Fukushima of Punahou; 126: Jennifer Miyahira of Mid-Pacific; 138: Shani Alvarado of Moanalua; 144: Anna Tong of Kaiser; and 152: Stephany Lee of Moanalua.
Four-time Hawai'i state champion Caylene Valdez lost her 110-pound quarterfinal to the California champion on a takedown in the final 15 seconds.
"The competition is extremely tough and our girls are wrestling well," said Pac-Five coach Keith Matsumoto, who is with the Hawai'i team.
The tournament continues today.
SWIMMING
Neck and neck: Iolani teammates Mark Eckert Jr. and Hongzhe Sun flew 4,000 miles together to Minneapolis, Minn., to compete in the USA Swimming Spring National Championships, and finished the meet swimming stroke for stroke against each other in their final event.
Eckert, a 15-year-old sophomore, touched out Sun, a 16-year-old junior, for 12th place in the 200-meter individual medley. Eckert's time was 2 minutes, 10.51 seconds, his lifetime best by more than a second. Sun was 21/100ths of a second behind Eckert in 2:10.72.
Eckert's best finish in the meet was ninth place in the 400 individual medley. Sun's best was eighth place in the 100 backstroke.
WRESTLING
Lee 7th: Cornell freshman Travis Lee of Honolulu defeated Chris Rodrigues of North Carolina 14-4 yesterday to take seventh place in the 125-pound division of the NCAA Division I Championships at Albany, N.Y.
The first eight wrestlers in each weight class were named All-Americans. Lee is a 2001 St. Louis School graduate from Liliha.
Rodrigues was the third opponent Lee defeated in postseason who had beaten him earlier in the season.
First-seeded Stephen Abas of Fresno State defeated seventh-seeded Luke Eustice of Iowa for the 125-pound championship.
Minnesota won the team championship.
