ERNEST H. FUKEDA JR., president and chief operating officer of The Hawaiian Insurance & Guaranty Co. Ltd. (HIG), has additionally been named senior vice president of J. Gordon Gaines Inc., the holding company of HIG's parent company, Vesta Fire Insurance Corp.

• Former Stanford University Medical Center executive TERRY L. LONG has been named new chief financial officer for St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawai'i. Long is former vice president and director of finance at Stanford, and before that a senior manager in the Honolulu office of Ernst & Young.

• Also joining the St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawai'i is new chief clinical officer DR. JONATHAN WEISUL. He will be responsible for clinical operations of the system's two medical centers — in Liliha and 'Ewa — as well as its hospice, Home Health Agency, Health Services for Senior Citizens and Mobile Care programs. He was formerly medical director for the Maui Region of Hawai'i Health Systems Corp., and state Department of Health, Maui County emergency Medical Services program.

• The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific (REHAB), a medical rehabilitation inpatient hospital, with 14 clinics statewide, has announced expansion of its management team:

  • EDWARD ONTAI has been named to the newly-created position of vice president of business development, overseeing REHAB'S marketing, program development and human resources. He is a former consultant for Deloitte & Touche.
  • LORI HO was promoted to the new position of director of rehabilitation services, overseeing both inpatient and outpatient services. The 10-year-veteran at REHAB has previously served as speech pathologist and inpatient therapy manager.
  • Also joining the REHAB team is 20-year rehabilitation medicine veteran DR. PETER ROSSI as rehabilitation neurologist. Rossi is also co-author of the book "Living with Stroke."

JERRY PUPILLO, former assistant general manager of Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park has become general manager of the 25-acre Kapolei water-themed amusement park. Pupillo, who will now oversee all aspects of park management, including sales, marketing and promotions, was the park's first employee hired in October, 1998. Also announced:

TAKUYA OHKI, who managed eastbound tours for the property, will expand into the east and west markets as new senior manager of sales and marketing. He was previously with Polynesian Cultural Center.

KAI CUTTER, who also has been with the water park since the beginning, will add advertising and promotions to his title of special events manager. He is a former senior editor in the television department of Bloomberg L.P., an information services, news and media company in New York City.

JOHN LANDGRAF of First Hawaiian Bank's Commercial Real Estate Division, has been named to his third term as president of the Friends of the Cancer Research Center support and fund-raising group. Other new board officers include: vice president, LILA JOHNSON of the American Cancer Society; secretary, JAMES WRISTON of Ashford & Wriston Attorneys at Law LLP, and treasurer, MICHAEL CHING of Ernst & Young LLP. The Lauhala Street research center is one of 60 National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers, and is a research unit of the University of Hawai'i-Manoa.

• Two Star Markets employees, both of whom began with the grocery chain as courtesy clerks, have been promoted to director positions: 20-year store veteran ROEL TAVITA, named director of operations; and RICHARD HO, a graduate of the company's management training program and previously in a number of managerial positions, named new director of purchasing and merchandising.

• First Hawaiian Bank has announced a number of officer promotions and appointments:

  • Promotions: MICHAEL A. COATES, was named vice president and manager of the Transaction Management Department; NORMAN S. DOI, who joined First Hawaiian in 1991 with the merger of First Interstate Bank of Hawai'i, promoted to vice president and University Branch manager; MICHAEL J. DULANEY, promoted to assistant vice president, Dealer Center Division; and KATHYLEEN M. PERREIRA, promoted to assistant vice president, Information Management Group.
  • Appointments: KIM HUBER to personal banking officer, Kapi'olani Banking Center, and LANCE N. MATSUDA to service manager, Chinatown Bank.
