Sewage spills at Aliamanu station

A pressurized sewer line ruptured at the city's Aliamanu Pump Station on Salt Lake Boulevard yesterday, spilling about 12,000 gallons of raw sewage.

Most of the sewage was captured in the sewage facility or absorbed into the ground, city officials said. About 150 gallons made it into a nearby storm drain.

The state Health Department was notified, and signs warning of possible contamination were posted while samples were tested.

The spill was reported at 10:45 a.m.

City workers were at the facility at 11:15 a.m. and had the spill under control at 1:30 p.m., city officials said.

The Aliamanu Pump Station is at the intersection of Salt Lake Boulevard and Lawehana Street.

Fire damages trucking firm office

Fire investigators are looking into the cause of a fire yesterday afternoon at 611 Middle St.

The fire was contained to a portable container office at the trucking firm Pineridge Farms, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Richard Soo.

A man working at a welding business next door reported the fire shortly after 2 p.m.

The man and his brother-in-law fought the blaze with a garden hose until firefighters arrived a few minutes later and extinguished it.

Soo said damage to the container, which housed the firm's dispatch station, was estimated at $40,000 to the structure and $15,000 to the contents.

Members of the Downtown Rotary of Honolulu and sailors from the Aegis cruiser USS Lake Erie will clean, paint and repair the River of Life Mission on Saturday.

The mission, a nonprofit group downtown, has been giving free meals, baths, clothing and counseling to homeless people for 15 years.

Last year it served 99,000 hot meals and delivered more than 200,000 through its food box program.

The U. S. Coast Guard cancelled a search for a missing boater and 22-foot outboard motorboat 26 miles off Kane'ohe Bay late Saturday after another vessel towed the disabled craft to shore.

The Coast Guard had sent two C-130 airplanes to search for the boat after receiving an afternoon distress call.

The search was called off after 10:17 p.m. when a Kane'ohe man called and said a fishing boat had spotted him and towed him to shore.
