The program recognizes individual excellence throughout the fire-service profession.
Attilio Leonardi was named "Chief Fire Officer."
Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in seven areas: experience, education, professional development, professional contributions, association membership, community involvement and technical competencies.
A board comprising members of the fire and emergency services and municipal agencies reviews candidates' qualifications.
The commission met on Feb. 25 to officially confer the designation upon Leonardi.
Only 58 fire-service professionals throughout the United States have earned the national-level designation.
Leonardi has been a member of the Honolulu Fire Department for 31 years and was appointed fire chief on April 11, 1998, by the Honolulu Fire Commission.
