WATER POLO

• Rainbow Wahine win: Senior Karin van Hoff scored two goals in the final 3:03 to lift the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine to a 5-3 water polo victory over UC Santa Barbara last night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

The Rainbows (8-8) are 3-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. UCSB (13-12) dropped to 2-4. The teams share the No. 9 ranking in the American Water Polo Coaches Association Top 20 poll.

Hawai'i scored the first three goals, getting scores from sophomore Chelsea Garner-Prohs and freshmen Beth Novick and Makana Whitford in the first five minutes. It was Whitford's first collegiate goal.

The Gauchos cut the deficit to 3-2 at halftime and tied the score with a power-play goal in the closing seconds of the third period.

After going scoreless for more than 24 minutes, the Rainbow Wahine broke loose behind van Hoff. She scored her first goal from close range, with 3:03 showing, then hit from outside on UH's next possession. Hawai'i goalie Christa Tackaberry made two of her 12 saves in the final 1:43.

The Rainbows took 22 shots to UCSB's 21. Gaucho goalie Rachel Balint had seven saves.

Hawai'i opens play in the three-day Rainbow Challenge tomorrow, with matches against Orca, a club team from Orange County, Calif., at 10 a.m., and 19th-ranked UC-Irvine at 6 p.m.

FOOTBALL

• Rolovich to meet with 49ers: The San Francisco 49ers have scheduled a private meeting April 10 with former University of Hawai'i quarterback Nick Rolovich.

Because the meeting is not a designated National Football League scouting combine, Rolovich will be restricted from competing in certain passing drills. But the extensive interview indicates the 49ers' strong interest in Rolovich as the April 20-21 NFL draft approaches.

Following a scouting combine in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Rolovich said he met with officials from the 49ers and Arizona Cardinals.

"I know he'll get into an NFL camp," UH coach June Jones said. "I think he'll get drafted, at least that's my gut feeling. But we'll have to wait until the draft to see what happens."

Jones said Rolovich is smart and has a strong arm. "Plus, he's a winner," said Jones, noting Rolovich did not lose a regular-season game as a starter in high school or junior college. "He knows how to get it done."
