Man allegedly drove at boysPolice have opened a second-degree attempted murder case and seized the car that police say a man drove into a group of teenage boys late last night in Pearl City.
One boy was taken to The Queen's Medical Center for treatment of injuries. Police described his condition as stable; Queen's staff declined to release information.
Police could not confirm the victim's age this morning but said that all three of the boys were 15 or 16.
The suspect, a 25-year-old Pearl City resident, was arrested after the 11:57 p.m. incident, at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Waimano Home Road. Detectives also are pursuing charges of failure to render aid, driving under the influence and two counts of reckless endangering.
The incident began when the boys, who were crossing Kamehameha in the crosswalk, exchanged words with the driver, waiting at the light. The suspect then drove his car into the group, police said.
The Pearl City police station is half a block away; a patrol sergeant witnessed the incident and arrested the driver.
Three sought in stabbing of man
A passerby near Kalihi's Lanakila District Park called police today after spotting a stabbing victim, an ice pick still in his back, slumped over the steering wheel of his car.
Police classified the case, reported at 2:05 a.m., as an attempted murder but have not located any of the three suspects the victim reported.
The victim, a 53-year-old Kalihi man, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center. Police said he was in serious condition initially; hospital staff declined to release information.
The victim told police that he had been in the restroom at the park, 1701 Lanakila Ave., when a man asked him for money.
When told that the victim had no money, the assailant allegedly punched him in the head. The victim told police he then felt another man grab him from behind and stab him, and he saw a third male suspect standing by the door.
The victim described the first suspect as a man in his mid-30s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 240 pounds with a muscular build. He also has black hair and a mustache and was wearing a brown, white and maroon shirt with horizontal stripes.
Suspected drug lab found in Salt Lake
Narcotics officers today confiscated liquid from a suspected drug lab in Salt Lake, after both fire and police responded to reports of a gas odor coming from the house.
The liquid must be analyzed before charges can be considered against anyone living at the residence, said Maj. Darryl Perry, who heads the police Narcotics/Vice Division.
The initial report came at 11:45 p.m. last night, but firefighters responding believed the smell was suspicious, said Capt. Kenison Tejada, fire department spokesman.
"The behavior of the residents put us on our guard," Tejada said.
Police were called and residents initially denied them access before letting them in early this morning, Perry said.
The fire hazmat crew were testing for acetone, a chemical component used in clandestine drug labs but were unable to find that substance, Tejada said.
If the liquid turns out to be crystal meth or other controlled substance, it could have yielded about two pounds of a drug, Perry said.
Man allegedly tried to run down boy
Police arrested a 29-year-old man yesterday after he allegedly attempted to run down a 14-year-old boy walking in Waipi'o Acres, north of Mililani.
The boy told police he was walking on Wainihi Street toward Kipapa Drive when he saw the suspect driving a white Nissan truck.
When the driver spotted the boy, he allegedly crossed over the center line and then onto the sidewalk where the boy was walking. The teen said he jumped over a cement wall at the Waikakalaua Stream bridge to avoid being hit.
The victim said he ran to a friend's house to call police and then went home. Police said that while officers were at the victim's home investigating, the suspect drove to the house to speak to the boy's mother. He was arrested.
Police did not say how the suspect knew the boy's address.
