CSX wants to raise fees

Ocean cargo transportation company CSX Lines has followed the lead of Matson Navigation Co. in seeking a 2.75 percent general shipping rate increase for Hawai'i service effective April 21.
CSX said the proposed hike is necessary to partially offset increases in security costs, local trucking rates and other operating expenses, including equipment investments.
Approval rests with the Surface Transportation Board, the federal agency that oversees ocean shipping and has typically granted requested rate increases.
The rate hike filing was made earlier this month following one by Matson, which wants a 2.75 percent increase effective April 14.
CSX also was recently granted increases in fees for shipping a single vehicle interisland to $891 from $850; for shipping cargo to Lana'i or Moloka'i to $500 per 20-foot container, and $750 per 40- or 45-foot container; and for handling hazardous cargo in Hawai'i to $100.
