Driver badly hurt in pickup accident

A 42-year-old man suffered severe injuries yesterday in an early-morning accident in which the car he was driving hit traffic signs and parked cars in Kalihi.

Police said the driver was speeding in the northbound lanes of Waiakamilo Road when he lost control and went off the roadway on its east shoulder at 1:40 a.m.

The 1996 Dodge Dakota pickup truck struck several street signs and a parked van, police said.

The truck then crossed into the southbound lanes of Waiakamilo before it went onto the sidewalk at the intersection with Kaumuali'i Street and hit another parked car.

He was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.

Police consider speed a factor in the case. They did not know if alcohol was involved.

Suspect detained in Kalihi burglaries

A 27-year-old man is being held in lieu of bail totaling $100,000 for three counts of burglary and one of second-degree impersonation of a law enforcement officer. He has no local address.

Rendell C. Valenzuela is accused of impersonating a police officer who told the victim in a Kalihi burglary that he was trying to catch the burglar.

Valenzuela's charges stem from three Kalihi burglaries, including one March 19 at an 'Akina Street home. At about 9:30 a.m. on that date, Valenzuela was standing in the doorway of the house when a female resident coming out of the bathroom confronted him, according to court documents.

Valenzuela allegedly told her he was a police officer searching for a burglary suspect and persuaded her to show him all the rooms in the house.

The woman's son arrived home and asked to see police identification from the man, who produced what he said was his badge number. The suspect then left the home.

Valenzuela was arrested at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on Bannister Street.

Tantalus crash victim identified

The man killed in a one-car traffic accident early Saturday has been identified as Koki Osaki, 24, of Honolulu.

The accident occurred shortly before 4 a.m. in the 3300 block of Tantalus Drive.

Osaki, who is a Japanese national, was heading south along the winding road. He had turned toward the left and was unable to recover from the turn, police said. The 1995 Nissan that Osaki was driving veered right and then went off the roadway.

The car tumbled 12 feet to an embankment and hit a tree, police said.

Speed was considered a factor in the case.

Fugitive arrested in 'Aiea condo

Police yesterday arrested a felon wanted for parole revocation warrants after almost five days of an intensive search.

Fred Masami Kiyabu Jr., 42, has 14 felony convictions for attempted murder, robbery, extortion and weapons offenses. He was arrested by the Pearl City district crime reduction unit at about 10:30 a.m. yesterday in a Koauka Loop condominium in 'Aiea.

An associate, fugitive Michael Lee Cregan, was arrested Saturday in Waipahu.

Police said the two are being investigated in connection with other crimes.
