University of Hawai'i women's assistant basketball coach Jon Newlee has accepted the head coaching position at Idaho State, it was announced yesterday by Rainbow Wahine head coach Vince Goo.

During his three seasons at UH, the Rainbows won 20 or more games each season, while earning three consecutive berths in the Women's National Invitation Tournament.

"I'd like to thank Vince for the opportunity here," Newlee said. "It's been a great three years in Hawai'i, but the time is right for a change in my career and I'm excited about this new position."

Newlee's duties included recruiting, scouting and directing the team's post players.

"Jon has been a big part of our success the last three years," Goo said.

Idaho State finished last season at 10-17 overall and 3-11 in the Big Sky Conference under interim head coach Lynn Kennedy.

FOOTBALL

• New rivalry: O'ahu's newest public high school, Kapolei, will make its varsity football debut against eight-time O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion Wai'anae.

The two Leeward teams will meet Friday night, Aug. 23, at Wai'anae in a non-conference game, Wai'anae athletic director Leo Ta'aca said yesterday.

Kapolei will not have seniors until the fall of 2003, but will play next season in the Blue Conference, made up of the bottom eight OIA teams.

"There is a nice, friendly rivalry developing between Kapolei and us," Ta'aca said. "One of their first victories in any sport was in a game against one of our junior varsity teams."

Kapolei opened in September 2000 with only a freshman class.

• Chaminade sweeps: Melissa Marquez tossed a three-hitter and Kimberly Belles drove in three runs, leading Chaminade to a 6-0 second-game victory over Eastern Oregon for a doubleheader sweep yesterday at Palolo Field.

In the first game, Kelsi Kobashigawa and Genevieve Tsukayama sparked a nine-run sixth inning with two RBIs each, leading the Silverswords to a 9-2 victory.

Kelly Kaaihili scattered five hits and two runs in pitching the seven-inning distance to improve to 7-11. Balles and Marquez had two hits each to lead Chaminade's 10-hit offense.

Marquez (10-7) struck out seven and walked one in the nightcap and was supported by a five-run fourth inning.

Chaminade improved to 18-16 with the sweep. Eastern Oregon fell to 4-7.

• UH-Hilo loses twice: Kristin Alvarez scored from third base on an error in the bottom of the eighth inning, lifting Saint Leo to a 4-3 victory over University of Hawai'i-Hilo to complete a doubleheader sweep yesterday at University Field in St. Leo, Fla.

In the first game, Daffney Green doubled home Jennifer Shirley from third base in the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-all tie, lifting Saint Leo over UH-Hilo, 3-2.

Saint Leo improved to 25-8. UH-Hilo fell to 24-8.
