Kalaheo's 50-game OIA win streak ends

Advertiser Staff

McKinley High School's Amber Lee scored 19 points last night as the visiting Tigers defeated Kalaheo, 33-29, breaking the Mustangs' 50-game winning streak in O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball.

Lee's putback with a minute to play gave the Tigers (2-0) a 30-29 lead and handed the four-time defending OIA champion Mustangs (1-1) their first league defeat since 1997.

Ironically, it was McKinley that handed Kalaheo its last OIA defeat — in regular season and league playoffs — in the title game five years ago.

'Aiea defeated Kalaheo in last year's state title game.

The Mustangs went 1-for-8 from the field in the fourth period last night, squandering a six-point third-quarter lead.

"We were somewhat in control entering the fourth quarter, and then we didn't do anything offensively," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "We were settling for too many perimeter shots and didn't go inside as much as we should have."

McKinley, meanwhile, stuck to a deliberate offense that limited the Mustangs' shot attempts.

"They were very patient, and we played at their pace," Furtado said. "They did a good job of going to Amber a lot."

Kalaheo was 2-of-14 from the 3-point line, including 1-for-10 in the second half.

Latoya Wiley scored 14 points to lead the Mustangs.
