Wahine softball sweeps Spartans

Advertiser Staff

Sheri Oronoz and Melissa Coogan pitched strong complete games to lead Hawai'i to a 3-1 and 8-1 Western Athletic Conference softball sweep of San Jose State in San Jose, Calif.

The Rainbows (25-15, 6-0 WAC) extended their winning streak to seven, while the Spartans (13-29, 1-5) have dropped five in a row.

The teams meet again today for another doubleheader.

In the opener, Oronoz (15-7) scattered five hits and four walks with two strikeouts. Stacey Porter's three-run home run in the sixth was all the offense the Rainbows mustered against SJSU's Carol Forbes. The blast was Porter's 10th of the season which set a school single-season record.

In the second game, Coogan (8-6) allowed six hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

BYUH splits: Kassiopeia Hood pitched a two-hitter, striking out six and walking two as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Montana State-Billings, 4-0, to earn a split of a doubleheader yesterday at Billings, Mont.

The Seasiders fell in the first game, 7-1.

HPU swept: Western New Mexico swept Hawai'i Pacific, 8-5 and 5-3, yesterday at Silver City, N.M.

BASEBALL

Nebraska's Komine gets no-decision: Shane Komine's victory string didn't end, but it wasn't extended either, as eighth-ranked Nebraska lost to Kansas State, 9-8, yesterday at Manhattan, Kan.

Komine, a senior two-time All-American from Honolulu who has won 16 straight Big 12 Conference decisions, left the mound after five rocky innings — his shortest outing of the season. He allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits; he struck out five, but walked a season-high four and hit a batter.

SHOOTING

Tanoue third: Honolulu's Ryan Tanoue finished third in defense of his national Junior Olympics air rifle championship yesterday at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Tanoue, a 19-year-old freshman at the University of Nevada, won the NCAA air rifle championship on March 15 and won the Junior Olympics title last year.

Murray State (Ky.) freshman Robert Purdy won yesterday with a score of 1274.8 of a possible 1309. Tanoue scored 1270.1.

SWIMMING

UH's Bloch 12th: University of Hawai'i swimmer Cheyne Bloch finished 12th in the 100 breaststroke at the Men's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, Ga. yesterday.

The sophomore, who is at his first NCAA championships, finished with a time of 54.48 seconds.

WATER POLO

UH beats Brown: Chelsea Garner-Prohs scored three goals as the University of Hawai'i beat Brown, 6-2, in the Rainbow Challenge yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
