Lei contest winners are ...

Bill Char won the mayor's grand prize and Happy Tamanaha won three first-place awards yesterday at the city Department of Parks and Recreation 2002 Lei Contest at Kapi'olani Park.

Char won the grand prize for his red lei. He also won the hat lei category. Tamanaha won the theme lei, open green and open yellow categories.

Brian Choy won the open blue and mixed lei categories, and Norberto Cabugon won the open red and open white categories.

Other winners were: Charlene Choy (open brown) and Velma Omura (open orange).

The theme of the lei contest was Pulama Amelika, or Cherish America. It was part of the Lei Day Festival at the park.
