Navy contract awarded for bachelor quarters

U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie has announced a $19.2 million Navy contract with Dick Pacific Construction Co. Ltd. of Honolulu for the design and alteration of bachelor enlisted quarters at Pearl Harbor Naval Station.

The project will upgrade 156 units in Building 1723 and include improvements in the area of administrative space, Abercrombie's office said.

The work is expected to be completed by Nov. 2004.

Abercrombie, D-Hawai'i, the ranking member of the House Military Installations and Facilities Subcommittee, said "improvements like this are a high priority."

"They're crucial to morale, readiness and retention in a military that's under strain from post 9/11 commitments," he said. "Those we send in harm's way deserve decent living quarters and attention to other quality of life issues."
