Cookies' creative packaging

Artist Michael Furuya, best known for his whimsical illustrations of children's books by Lisa Matsumoto, recently completed art for the packaging of a local line of cookies, Clara Confections. Furuya's paintings of tropical fruits and birds complement the gourmet line of tropical flavored shortbread cookies dipped in chocolate.

The project was pulled together by Stephen Goss of Studio Ignition, a local graphic design firm recognized in the 2002 Pele Awards (for advertising excellence) as Best in Show. During a special sampling of the cookies from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Neiman Marcus, Furuya's artwork will be offered as greeting cards and prints, and the artist has agreed to sign any purchases.

New mysteries with Hawai'i connection

Ann Rule is widely regarded as the inventor of the modern true crime genre, from her blockbuster first book, "The Stranger Beside Me," about Ted Bundy, to her current hardcover, "Every Breath You Take." This last has a Hawai'i connection: The convicted killer about whom she writes — Allen Van Houte, later Allen Blackthorne — once had a business here and absconded without paying his bills.

Among Rule's projects is another Hawai'i-related tragedy: the murder of former Hawaiian Airlines pilot Chris Northon by his wife, Liysa. The two divided their time between Lanikai and Bend, Ore., until Northon was found dead at a campground in Eastern Oregon in October 2000. Liysa was convicted of shooting her husband as he slept. In an e-mail, Rule told The Advertiser she would like to hear from anyone who knew the Northons (go to www.annrules.com and see "contact information"). The book for Simon & Schuster is due out at Christmas 2003.
