Broken main cancels classes

For the second time in two weeks, Windward Community College was forced to cancel classes yesterday because of a water main break caused by construction work near the school.

The break on Keaahala Road also caused the cancellation of evening classes and closed Kane'ohe District Park for the remainder of the day.

The college canceled night classes April 22 when construction workers at a road widening project broke a water main. About 300 students were affected.

Yesterday's break occurred about 10:49 a.m., said Wanda Yamane, with the Board of Water Supply public information office.

The repair work was expected to be complete in time for classes at the college to resume today.

Wai'alae school to hold festival

Wai'alae Elementary School will hold its World Fest 2002 from 9 a.m. to

2 p.m. tomorrow on its campus at 1045 19th Ave.

The festival, which is open to the public, features games, inflatable slides, entertainment, food booths, crafts and plants. Parking is available at the school or Wai'alae Baptist Church, 1047 21st Ave. Proceeds from the community event benefit the Friends of Wai'alae School, a nonprofit organization.

School to hold open house

Epiphany School in Kaimuki will hold an open house 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The elementary school, at 1041 10th Ave., is an accredited school affiliated with the Episcopalian church and has an enrollment of about 160 students.

Parking is available in the municipal lot on 11th Avenue. Reservations for the open house are required by Tuesday.

County opens Honomu bridge

HONOMU, Hawai'i — Hawai'i County officials held a ceremony this week to celebrate the opening of a new bridge spanning Honomu Stream.

Eighty percent of the

$2.1 million project was underwritten by the federal government. The bridge replaces a deteriorated one on the former Mamalahoa Highway that parallels the Hawai'i Belt Road.

FilCom center to hold forum

A free forum will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu to talk about the center's upcoming services, community events and activities.

The 50,000-square-foot "FilCom" Center is at the corner of Mokuola and Waipahu streets.

The center will hold its grand opening June 11.
