UH honors its greatest 14 female athletes ever

The University of Hawai'i honored 14 of its greatest female athletes at the 30th anniversary Rainbow Wahine Celebration dinner last night at the Coral Ballroom of the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
Maureen O'Toole, an Olympian and former UH swimmer, was the featured speaker.

BASEBALL CAMP
UHH's boys of summer: The University of Hawai'i at Hilo is holding its Summer Baseball School from June 10-14 at the Hawai'i-Hilo baseball field.
The camp has two sessions with ages 7-9 from 8:30 a.m.-noon and ages 10-12 from 1 p.m.-4:30 p.m. The fee for the five-day camp is $85.

CORRECTION
Strata Golf will be offering golfers a chance to sample its new ball tomorrow at 10 shops around the state.

GYMNASTICS
Twisters' Chinaka sixth: Christie Chinaka of Hawaiian Island Twisters finished sixth overall in the USA Junior Olympics Level 9 Senior B Division Western National Championship held last weekend in Rapid City, S.D.
Chinaka was eighth in the vault with a score of 9.300, third in the uneven bars (9.150), second in the balance beam (9.450) and 37th in the floor exercise (8.950) for an overall score of 36.850.
Other Hawai'i competitors:
- Anna Hildebrand (9.25 in vault, 8th; 9.175 in uneven bars, fifth; all-around, 35th in Junior C Division)
- Alyssa Onaga (9.05 in uneven bars, 7th in Senior B division)
- Rebecca Cardenas (9.225 in uneven, 6th in Junior A division)
SURFING
Kaua'i's Ballard third in Fiji: Rochelle Ballard of Kaua'i placed third in the Roxy Pro Fiji yesterday in 6- to 8-foot waves at Tavarua, Fiji.
Ballard won two heats yesterday, including a quarterfinal victory over four-time defending world champion Layne Beachley of Australia, but then was eliminated by South Africa's Heather Clark in the semifinals, 17.5-14.15.
Australian Melanie Redman-Carr defeated Clark in the one-on-one final, 17-25-10.5, to win the $10,000 first prize.
Ballard received $4,000, and was the top Hawai'i finisher. Megan Abubo of Waialua and Keala Kennelly of Kaua'i were eliminated in the third round and received $2,500 each.
The contest was the second stop on the World Championship Tour of women's surfing.
ULTIMATE FIGHTING
Hilo's Penn to fight: B.J. Penn of Hilo will take on Paul Creighton of Manhattan, N.Y., as part of an Ultimate Fighting Championship card to be held May 10 in Bossier City, La.
The 5-foot-9, 155-pound Penn, a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is 4-1 in Mixed Martial Arts competition. Creighton is 5-0.
