Shoppers are evidently gearing up to make mom feel extra special for Mother's Day this year.
A recent National Retail Federation survey shows that consumers plan to spend an average of $97 per household on Mother's Day gifts this year, up greatly from the 2001 average of $62.
While the reasons aren't clear, officials say that people may be expanding their lists of women to honor on Mother's Day, to include other female relatives, family friends and stepparents.
The survey also said nearly 17 percent of people will go online in their search for the perfect Mother's Day gift, and about 22 percent of consumers plan to give jewelry.
