Spartans roll over UH, 13-4

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i baseball team might want to know the way out of San Jose after the Spartans pounded out 18 hits in a 13-4 win in Western Athletic Conference baseball yesterday at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

It was the 11th consecutive win at home for San Jose State (38-13, 16-7 WAC) against UH (15-31, 4-16) spanning four seasons.

Dino Quintero led the Spartans by batting 4-for-5 with a walk. Hector Zamora had a two-run home run and RBI double and Bryan Baker had a double and solo home run.

Jahseam George (8-1) surrendered three runs, two earned, on seven hits and one walk, while striking out five in seven innings. Andy Cook pitched the final two innings, giving up a run.

Sean Yamashita (2-7) fell victim to a two-out error in the third that accounted for five unearned runs of the eight he gave up in 3á innings. Right fielder Tim Montgomery dropped a fly with runners at the corners and the next five batters reached safely. A three-run fourth, highlighted by Zamora's homer to right, followed by Baker's double to right ended Yamashita's day. Baker would score on Kevin Frandsen's single off reliever Matt Le Ducq, who gave up three runs in 1¡ innings.

Hawai'i scored in the first inning. With one out, Lane Nogawa reached on third baseman Frandsen's throwing error and scored when Gregg Omori tripled to center when center fielder Quintero slipped.

But the Spartans returned fire with the five-run third and three-run fourth and fifth innings to take an 11-1 lead.

The Rainbows scored in the seventh on a two-out, two-run double by Julian Russell to pull to 11-3.

The Spartans got single runs in the seventh on Baker's solo home run and an RBI single by Nathan Corrick in the eighth.

Hawai'i made another dent against SJSU pitching in the ninth. With two out, pinch-hitter Aaron Pribble, Chad Boudon, Russell and Grady Symonds singled in succession, but netted just one run before Cook struck out Derek Honma with the bases loaded to end the game.

The series concludes at 10 a.m. (HST) today, as the Rainbows try to avoid their third conference sweep.

Freshman Ricky Bauer will pitch for UH, while SJSU was uncommitted.

Notes: The Rainbows were without Brent Cook, who attended his grandmother's funeral in Reno, Nev., yesterday. He is expected to join the team for today's game.
