Moanalua surprises McKinley in double OT

Christina Sierra scored 21 points, Patti Hardimon 16 and Kepua Lee 13 to lead Moanalua to a 61-54 double-overtime upset of O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division champion McKinley last night at McKinley.

In other quarterfinal games of the OIA playoffs last night, Kalaheo beat Kaimuki, 65-49, and Pearl City defeated Kalani, 50-46, and Kahuku defeated Campbell, 58-36.

By reaching the semifinals, Moanalua, Pearl City, Kahuku and Kalaheo earned the league's four state tournament berths.

Amber Lee led the Tigers with 17 points. Moanalua's Lee made a layup with 12 seconds left to tie the game at 40-all and force the second overtime.

• MPI wins tourney title: Matt Inouye sparked a five-run second inning with a three-run triple as Mid-Pacific defeated Iolani, 5-3, yesterday at Aloha Stadium to win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu double-elimination tournament.

The Owls will play regular-season champion Kamehameha on Tuesday at Aloha Stadium for the league championship and first-round bye in the state tournament.

MIL BASEBALL

• Maui will play for title: Top-seeded Maui won two games yesterday to move into the championship game of the Maui Interscholastic League baseball tournament at Iron Maehara Stadium.

The Sabers, who lost their tournament opener to Baldwin on Thursday, eliminated Lahainaluna, 14-6, then handed the Bears their first loss of the tournament, 13-7.

Baldwin beat Lahainaluna, 7-6, in yesterday's first game between the tourney's two unbeaten teams.

Maui and Baldwin will play for the tournament title at 6 p.m. Friday at Iron Maehara Stadium. If Baldwin wins, the two teams will play again Saturday for the MIL title. Maui, the regular-season champ, would take the crown with a win Friday.
