Pedestrian hurt in collision improves

An 18-year-old woman struck by a truck while she crossed Fort Weaver Road late Saturday night was in fair condition yesterday at The Queen's Medical Center.

Honolulu police investigators said the woman was not in a crosswalk when she tried to cross about 110 feet southeast of Karayan Street.

A 49-year-old man in a gray 1991 Toyota pickup tried to avoid hitting her, but she continued into the lane and was hit, police said.

Neither alcohol nor speed were factors in the collision, which occurred on a dry roadway well lit by overhead street lamps at a time when there was very little traffic.

The woman was transported to Queen's in critical condition, but had been upgraded to fair by yesterday.

Roadwork to close lanes

The city will begin roadway reconstruction today for the first phase of the Kaimuki master plan projects along Wai'alae Avenue between Sierra Drive and Koko Head Avenue.

Lane closures will last approximately five weeks. During the five-week period, one of the four lanes on Wai'alae Avenue will be closed 24 hours a day. During daytime construction hours, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., an adjacent lane will also be closed to accommodate construction equipment.

Coning for the construction will sometimes extend to 10th and 13th avenues.

During the morning and afternoon peak hours contra-flow coning will be provided as needed to facilitate traffic flow. The city Department of Transportation Services recommends that motorists use alternate routes whenever possible.

For more information, call the project hotline at 734-8690.

Center to honor volunteers

The Mo'ili'ili Community Center will hold its 5th annual community volunteer awards dinner from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Wai'alae Country Club.

This year's honorees are Jane Morimoto, a community center board member and treasurer, and Charles Furuya, who sits on the board of trustees.

The dinner, which costs $65, will include a silent auction and fashion show.

For reservations, call 955-1555 by Wednesday.
