St. Louis boys, Punahou girls win ILH judo titles

Advertiser Staff

Chris Sokugawa, Lane Shiroma and Prince Brown finished their two-year Interscholastic League of Honolulu judo careers undefeated, leading the way for the Crusaders as they defended their ILH boys varsity judo title Saturday at St. Louis' McCabe gym.

Ben Wilmore (121) and Les Shiroma (220-plus) also won their respective weight divisions, along with Sokugawa (178.2), Shiroma (198) and Brown (220). The Crusaders also added a runner-up and third-place finish.

For the second straight year Pac-Five placed second.

On the girls' side, Punahou claimed three weight classes — Lauren Primiano (115), Jennifer Frost (121) and Jessica Carey (136) — four runners-up and four third-place finishes to win the championship.

Defending and inaugural league champion Kamehameha finished second with 113 points.

This was the second year of sanctioned ILH judo competition. A story in Tuesday's Advertiser reported that the league competed at the club level last year.

TRACK

• Another record for Dignam: Iolani senior Lauran Dignam's 100-meter dash time of 12.20 Saturday will be recognized as the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls championship meet record.

Dignam's time, recorded by an electronic automated system, was .20 slower than the record hand-timed mark of 12.0 set by Punahou's Heidi Friese in 1981. But the ILH applies a conversion formula used by the NCAA in which there is a .24-second differential between hand-times and automated times.

Using that formula, Friese's time would become 12.24 in an automated system — .04 slower than Dignam's.

The same formula was applied to the boys 300 hurdles, which Kamehameha's Jesse Lee won with a record time of 39.20. Iolani's Mike Nakagawa also ran a 39.20 in 1988, but that event was hand-timed, so Lee's time is the record.

The 100 record is one of three set by Dignam in the ILH meet. She also set records in the 200 (25.06) and 400 (56.34). The 400 record was set in Thursday's trials.

Also, Iolani's girls took third place in six events Saturday. Another total was reported in yesterday's Advertiser.
