Man arrested in March robbery

An 18-year-old man was arrested today in connection with a March 28 robbery when the victim spotted him in Waikiki and called police.

The crime occurred near the intersection of Ala Wai Boulevard and Lewers Street, where the victim, 20, was sitting on a bench.

Police said he was approached by a man who asked if the victim wanted to buy marijuana. When the victim declined, the man pointed a handgun and demanded money.

The victim held his wallet open and the suspect allegedly took money and the victim's backpack and fled.

Just after midnight today the victim recognized the suspect; police arrested him at 325 Seaside Ave. First-degree robbery charges are pending.

Police arrest burglary suspect

A Palolo man yesterday turned his stepson over to police on suspicion of burglary when the older man found stolen property in their home.

Police were called after 8 a.m. to the 10th Avenue home when the stepfather found a woman's purse beneath the couch. The purse contained identification, police said, and when the man called its owner, she said it had been stolen, along with other property, in a burglary.

He then found a laptop and two guitars in his stepson's room that had been stolen from the woman's home, police said.

The 18-year-old was arrested and was released last night pending further investigation.

Big Island police issue scam alert

Big Island police have issued a warning about a scam in which a woman has been going house to house in Puna for the past three months selling phony orders for char siu.

The woman allegedly drives a red Ford Bronco II and tells residents she is selling char siu to benefit either a hula halau or the Hawaiian Paradise Park Association. She allegedly collects money but never delivers the pork on the date promised, police said.

Victims or anyone else with information are asked to call Officer Iris McGuire of the Puna Patrol, (808) 966-5835, or the police nonemergency number, (808) 935-3311.
