N.Y. woman who drowned on Maui identified

Associated Press

HANA, Maui — A woman who drowned on Maui after falling into a stream and being washed out to sea was identified yesterday as Xin Wang of New York City.

Wang, 42, was trying to cross a stream near the Seven Sacred Pools when she slipped and was washed over a small waterfall Saturday, said Haleakala National Park spokeswoman Jennifer Talken-Spaulding.

Wang had been taking pictures at Pipiwai Stream, officials said.

Her 50-year-old husband, Karl Timothy Wendt, also ended up in the ocean after he attempted to rescue her.

He managed to cling to a rock in the stream before he was rescued by fire personnel, who also brought his wife to shore.
