Kahuku school wins award

Kahuku High and Intermediate School won an award last weekend in the national competition "We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution," in Washington, D.C.

The school got the highest nonfinalist score in one of the competition's six units, "How the Values and Principles Embodied in the Constitution Shaped American Institutions and Practices."

Students competed against 50 classes from throughout the nation. They applied constitutional principles and historical facts to contemporary situations. Dobson High School, of Mesa, Ariz., won the competition.


HONOLULU

State names top recyclers

The state Department of Health announced the school winners for its 18th annual Aluminum Recycling Contest.

More than 25,000 students representing 62 schools collected more than 1.5 million cans as part of the one-month contest in February. The DOH partnered with TOMRA Recycling Network to promote school collection programs.

The winning schools on O'ahu are:

Large category — Mililani Mauka Elementary, first place; Moanalua Elementary, second place; Pearl Harbor Elementary, third place.

Medium category — Pearl Ridge Elementary, first place; Lincoln Elementary, second place; Ka'ala Elementary, third place; Royal School, honorable mention.

Small category — Waikiki School, first place; St. Michael's School, second place; Pearl City Highlands Elementary, third place; Palisades Elementary, honorable mention.

Top schools on the Neighbor Islands include Honaunau School, Ho'okena School, Kilauea School and St. Theresa School.
