"Under the Lehua," by 17-year-old Rinah Raguine of Hilo, won Best of Show in the 2002 Hawaii Junior Duck Stamp Contest and represented the state in the national competition in Washington, D.C.
Raguine, a St. Joseph's High School student, used a combination of watercolor pencils, water colors and acrylic gouache to create her illustration of two nene birds under an 'ohi'a lehua.
Meggy Brandt-Kelly, a home-schooled student from Honolulu, was first runner-up in the Hawai'i contest with her gouache illustration of a pair of nene and two goslings titled "A Proud Family, The Hawaii State Bird."
A portrayal of a mallard duck pair by an 18-year-old Montana girl won first place in the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest.
State Rep. David Pendleton has been selected as Alumnus of the Year by the faculty of the School of Religion at La Sierra University.
Pendleton is also an attorney, pastor and former school teacher.
Denarius Gavin of Mililani is Hawai'i's champion high school orator. He represented the state at the 65th Annual American Legion National High School Oratorical Contest last month in Indianapolis, Ind.
Opening night of the Shaolin Warriors, presented by Tim Bostock Productions and Bank of Hawaii, was a benefit for the Palolo Chinese Home. The home recently launched a renovation campaign. A total of $8,000, or 25 percent of the ticket sales for the night, was donated to the fund.
LeeAnne Mathews of Honolulu has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship from Linfield College.
