UH coach Wallace to be roasted Saturday

The "Life of Riley," a roast of University of Hawai'i men's basketball coach Riley Wallace, will be held Saturday at the Honolulu Country Club.

The roast will feature members of the local media and supporters of the UH basketball program. Several items will also be available for auction, including a 2002 Honda Accord.

Individual tickets are $100. Tables of 10 run from $1,000 to $5,000. Proceeds will benefit the Epilepsy Foundation of Hawai'i.

CLINIC

• Improve your speed: Athletes — weekend or otherwise — can improve their running skills and endurance at the Rich Miano Speed and Quickness Clinic May 18-19 at St. Louis School's field.

Athletes ages 9-12 may participate either May 18 or May 19, with both sessions from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Those 13 and older may choose one of the afternoon sessions on May 18 or May 19. Both sessions run from 1:45 p.m. to 5:15.

Each session costs $25. Participants must bring running or gym shoes.

Miano played football at the University of Hawai'i, where he now is an assistant coach. Mel deLaura, UH's strength coach, and Marshall Marumoto, a former Kamehameha Schools track coach, will assist.

SURFING

• Dorian delights: Shane Dorian of Kailua, Kona, posted some of the highest scores during the opening day of the Billabong Pro yesterday at Teahupoo, Tahiti.

In waves of 8 to 10 feet, Dorian received scores of 9.0 and 7.5 for impressive barrel rides in his first-round victory. With the win, Dorian advanced directly to the third round.

Kalani Robb of O'ahu's North Shore placed third in his first-round heat, and advanced to the second round.
