Throngs of fans cheered on the Warriors today as they snaked their way on a trolley from the Manoa campus to downtown, celebrating the team's victory Saturday over Pepperdine in the NCAA championship.
"It happens nowhere else," UH coach Mike Wilton said of the fan adoration. "It's so wonderful to accomplish something like this and to share it with the people of Hawai'i. It really, really means a lot."
Tony Ching, junior outside hitter and former Kamehameha Schools athlete, was overwhelmed by the reception.
"This is awesome; this is the best thing ever. You come home and get treated like a king after winning a volleyball game. That is only in Hawai'i for sure," he said.
The trolley made stops at UH's Varney Circle, the state Capitol, fan-filled Tamarind Park and Murphy's Bar & Grill.
About a thousand fans overcrowded the park, blocking two lanes of South King Street.
Along the way, the Warriors treated fans, including Kaahumanu School students who lined a block along Beretania, with cheers and shaka signs.
Tomorrow, the team will attend an invitation-only luncheon hosted by Gov. Ben Cayetano at Washington Place. They also will appear at Honolulu Hale at 3 p.m. to receive a proclamation from Mayor Jeremy Harris.
On Saturday, the team plans to attend the city's Sunset on the Beach event between 6:30 and 7 p.m. at Kuhio Beach in Waikiki.
