Kaiser team scores big for its honesty
Excellence isn't about being perfect, it's about having integrity and learning from your mistakes.
On that score, Vallent Lee, Shinyoung Oh and Claire Tsutsumi the Kaiser High School team competing in the Math Bowl XXIV were big winners.
Chances are, no one would have been the wiser had they kept quiet and walked away with the winners' trophy. But once they discovered a scoring error, they elected to report it, and dropped to third place.
The statewide competition is meant to promote math education and test outstanding students in algebra, trigonometry, analytical geometry, statistics and more.
Lee, Oh and Tsutsumi solved some difficult math problems and aced a moral dilemma as well. You can't do better than that.
