Waipahu holds off Kalaheo to gain baseball quarterfinal

Clifton Gumban scored on a bases-loaded walk to break a 2-all tie in the fifth inning as Waipahu defeated Kalaheo, 3-2, yesterday in the first round of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association baseball tournament at Kailua Rec Field.

Jared Kiyabu scattered eight hits in pitching the seven-inning distance.

Waipahu plays at 'Aiea in today's quarterfinals at 4 p.m.

• MILILANI 3, MOANALUA 2: Chris Balatico pitched out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the sixth inning as the Trojans defeated the Menehunes and will play at Kahuku in today's quarterfinals. Game time is 4 p.m. Moanalua scored a run in the sixth to close to 3-2 and had the bases loaded. But Balatico got a strikeout, then made a diving catch on a squeeze attempt, and got the runner trying to get back to third base.

• CASTLE 6, PEARL CITY 5: With two outs in the top of the seventh, Noah Kon drove in Scott Shinsato and Jason Taniguchi for a 6-3 lead as the Knights hung on to beat the Chargers. Castle will play Roosevelt today at Stevenson Intermediate field starting at 4 p.m. Pearl City scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh.

• KAILUA 13, CAMPBELL 0: Doof Santos allowed a hit in four innings, and the Surfriders pounded out 14 hits in rolling past the Sabers to advance to today's 4 p.m. quarterfinal at Wai'anae. Santos also had four hits, including three doubles and drove in three runs, Michael Kealoha and Chad Nishizuka each had two RBIs.

ILH BASKETBALL

• IOLANI, MARYKNOLL ADVANCE: Ginger Gravelle scored 18 points and Trisha Nishimoto, in her return to the courts since an ankle injury, scored 14 points as the Raiders defeated the Lancers in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game at McCabe Gym.

Iolani will play Maryknoll, a 59-43 winner over Sacred Hearts, tomorrow night at 6 at McCabe. The winner earns the league's third berth in the state tournament.

Michelle Baduria scored 15 points to lead the Spartans past the Junior Bows.
