Tourist drowns off Kuhio Beach

A 50-year-old Korean tourist drowned yesterday while swimming off Kuhio Beach.

The man was pulled to shore by Waikiki lifeguards and other beachgoers at about 4:50 p.m., police said.

Paramedics performed CPR, police said, but he was declared dead upon arrival at Straub Hospital at 5:07 p.m.

His name was withheld pending notification of family.

Examiner's office hit by fire

Fire investigators are probing the cause of a blaze that broke out in the city medical examiner's office today and forced staff to evacuate the building for about an hour.

Firefighters were summoned by a 9:23 a.m. alarm to 835 Iwilei Road, where the fire had started in one of the bathrooms, said fire Capt. Richard Soo.

The fire was contained in the bathroom, a staffer said, but no estimate of damage had been set this morning.

Man killed by car identified

The city medical examiner's office has identified the man killed in a Wednesday night pedestrian accident as Raymond Alan Melley, 31, of Wahiawa.

Melley died at the scene at 9:39 p.m. when he was hit by a car heading north on Kamehameha Highway, near Wheeler Army Airfield.

Police said it was unclear whether he had been walking, sitting or lying in the roadway when he was hit, adding that he was not in a marked crosswalk.

The accident happened about two-tenths of a mile north of Leilehua Golf Course Road.

Teens arrested in taxi robbery

Police arrested two teenage boys and were looking for two more males today in a robbery of a taxi driver just before midnight in Kalihi.

The victim, 61, picked up the four males at Democrat and Kalihi streets at 11:45 p.m. last night.

When they arrived at their destination at Libby Street, the driver asked for payment, police said. The passenger in the front seat allegedly swore at the driver and then punched him in the head several times before all four fled on foot.

Two, ages 15 and 16, were caught but later were released while investigation continues.
