On Saturday, help letter carriers' food drive

One of the hardest-hit social service agencies in Hawai'i in the tough days that followed the Sept. 11 attacks was the Hawai'i Food Bank.

It was a sobering reminder that many Island workers are only a paycheck or two away from being unable to feed their families.

Community response to the bare shelves at the Food Bank was impressive in those early days. But the need hasn't gone away, by any means.

You can do your part in keeping the Food Bank up to full speed in its vital mission by participating in tomorrow's National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive 2002. The idea is simplicity itself: Put out a stash of nonperishable food (high-protein foods preferred) by your mailbox, and the mail carriers will pick it up and see that it gets to the Food Bank.

This is a tremendous service by the carriers, who last year collected a record 276,000 pounds of food. With your help, they'll do even better tomorrow.
