UH camp welcomes back Carter

Anthony Carter is once again passing out assists for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team.

Carter, the former Rainbow Warrior star who is now a point guard for the Miami Heat, will appear at the 2002 UH Rainbow Men's Basketball Summer Camp next month.

"It shows what a class act he is," UH head coach Riley Wallace said. "He's made his feelings obvious for this program by the way he keeps giving back."

In February, Carter donated $100,000 to establish a scholarship for the UH men's basketball program.

The camp will be held at the UH-Manoa athletic complex, and is open to boys and girls ages 5 through 17. Two sessions are scheduled: June 8-10, and June 11-13. Wallace said Carter will appear at both sessions.

Carter played at UH from 1996-98, and averaged 18.4 points and 6.9 assists per game .

"He has a lot to share, and he loves talking to the kids," Wallace said. "It should be fun."

The fee is $150 per session. Other current and former 'Bows, including Mindaugas Burneika, Mike McIntyre and Lance Takaki, are scheduled to assist.

• New shoes: After more than a decade with Nike, the 'Bows will now be sponsored by adidas.

Wallace said he recently signed a three-year contract with adidas, although he did not reveal financial details.

"It's a better deal than what we had with Nike, put it that way," he said.

The contract will take effect June 1. Starting next season, adidas will provide shoes and other apparel for the UH players and coaches.

In addition, the annual Nike tournament will be renamed, although details are still being finalized with adidas.

• Globetrotters out: For financial reasons, the 'Bows will not play the Harlem Globetrotters in an exhibition game next season.

Wallace discussed the possibility of the game a few months ago, but recently discovered that "it would have cost too much to get them here."

He said the 'Bows will still play two exhibition games next season. One will be against the EA Sports All-Stars. Wallace said he will ask Hawai'i-Hilo to play the other one.

The regular-season schedule has yet to be finalized
