BYUH, HPU set up showdown

The easy part is over.
Now Hawai'i Pacific will have to face top-ranked and arch rival Brigham Young University-Hawai'i today in the quarterfinals of the men's NCAA II National Championship tournament in Kansas City, Mo.
Both schools easily defeated their opponents, 5-0, to advance to the second round. (Today's match has been rescheduled to 8 a.m. Hawai'i time.)
The Seasiders (26-1) blanked Assumption College, sweeping the doubles with the No. 1 duo of Jan Krejci and Peter Madarassy securing an 8-1 victory. Hung Soon Park and Hong Tae Kim were the first to finish their singles matches to seal the win. National and Region Rookie of the Year Krejci was down 2-4 to AC's Sean Kenney in the second set before the match was called.
"It was good to play," BYUH head coach David Porter said. "They were probably a little stronger than we had thought in terms of depth, but they were good enough to give us a good workout."
The sixth-ranked Sea Warriors (20-4) put away Colorado School of Mines, winning all three doubles matches. Mikael Maatta and Stefan Pampulov won their singles matches to secure HPU's win.
BYUH faced HPU three times this season, losing once to the Sea Warriors in the Pacific West Tennis Championships in mid-April. That was their last meeting.
"I think the team is ready. In fact, I think they're kind of happy to play them," Porter said. "It's going to be a good match-up. Either way Hawai'i will be well-represented in the next round."
Last year's national champions, third-seeded Rollins College, fell to unseeded Northwood in the first round.
The top-ranked BYUH women (26-0) also advanced to the quarterfinals, putting away Northern Michigan, 5-0, in their opening match. Adrienn Hegedus, who earned West Region Rookie of the Year honors Tuesday, shut out her opponent in her singles match. Moments later Tomoko Sukegawa and Amy Sun easily won their singles matches, sending the Sea Warriors into the next round.
Favorites to win the national title, the Seasider women have won four national titles in the past five years, finishing second last year.
"It we stay healthy and injury-free, I think we'd be pretty hard to beat," Porter said. "But you never know ... Nothing's a sure thing in sports."
