Mols fans 14 to spark Roosevelt's victory

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Roosevelt High School senior Chris Mols struck out 14 yesterday in a seven-inning effort to lead the Rough Riders to an 8-3 victory over Castle and only their second state tournament berth since 1991.

Roosevelt senior left-hander Chris Mols struck out 14 batters in pitching the seven-inning distance in yesterday's O'ahu Interscholastic Association's quarterfinal victory over Castle.

Eugene Tanner • The Honolulu Advertiser

Roosevelt will play 'Aiea, an 8-1 winner over Waipahu yesterday, at 4 p.m. today in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association semifinal at Aloha Stadium. In the 7 o'clock nightcap, defending state champion Kailua, which defeated Wai'anae 5-3 yesterday, will face Mililani, a 5-4 winner over Kahuku.

All four of yesterday's winners have earned state tournament berths, while the losers will fight it out for the league's fifth and final berth today and tomorrow.

Roosevelt's berth is its first since 1998, and you'd have to go back to 1991 for the one before that.

"We've been pretty good, making the playoffs almost every year, but we'd miss out on states and haven't gotten a lot of attention," Rough Riders coach Kerry Higa said. "In my eight years here, the worst we've done is 4-4-1 twice. Usually we were 7-2 or 6-3."

Roosevelt is now 9-2, having avenged one of its losses by defeating Castle (7-5) yesterday at Stevenson Middle School field. In the first meeting during the regular season, tempers flared and heated words were exchanged.

There were no major incidents yesterday, although the intensity still was as thick as the humid afternoon air.

"Playing Castle is a grudge match, because I had never beaten them in four years," Mols said. "This is a game we really wanted to win."

Mols, a 5-foot-11, 173-pound left-hander, more than did his part. He struck out the side in the third inning and got two strikeouts in each of the second, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh frames. He gave up six hits and walked four.

"I take my hat off to him," Knights coach Joe Tom said. "He was well under control, he mixed it up and kept us off-balanced with off-speed pitches. He also hit the corners."

The Rough Riders provided early offensive support, scoring a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Ivan Fujii and two in the second on an error and Matt Terukina's run-scoring double.

Roosevelt made it 4-0 in the third inning on Cameron Kimura's sacrifice fly.

Castle rallied for three runs in the fourth on Jeff Syrop's RBI groundout, Jordan Tom's run-scoring double and an error.

But the Rough Riders widened the lead to 8-3 with a four-run fifth, highlighted by RBI singles from Blake Isobe and Derek Shigano.

All nine Roosevelt batters either got a hit or scored a run or both.

"Our team chemistry's been real good this year," Higa said. "Everybody backs each other up, and that's why we've had no squabbles about playing time. Everybody has settled into their roles."

That includes Mols, who also went 2-for-4.

"I knew our batters were going to hit and do their job," Mols said. "I just had to stick to it and do mine."
