Kalaheo's Latoya Wily, left, got pressured by Kahuku's Mereani Lewenilovo during the first quarter of last night's O'ahu Interscholastic League championship game. Kalaheo won its fifth straight title, 55-50.

Cameron Kimura had one of those afternoons ballplayers dream about, pitching a five-hitter and hitting two monster home runs yesterday to help Roosevelt High School defeat 'Aiea, 6-4, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association semifinal action at Aloha Stadium.

The Rough Riders (10-2) will face defending state champion Kailua, a 3-2 winner over Mililani, in tonight's title game at 7. The game, which will be televised live on Oceanic Channel 16, is Roosevelt's first championship appearance since 1998 and only its second since 1989.

"We wanted this from Day 1," said Kimura, a 6-foot, 190-pound junior right-hander. "No one (else) thought we were going to go this far."

The same might have been said for Kimura's two home runs, both of which easily cleared the 325-foot left-field fence. The first of his two-run homers, with one out in the bottom of the second inning, gave the Rough Riders a 2-0 lead. Corey Higa's two-run triple one out later made the score 4-0.

Kimura's second blast, which came with one out in the sixth, landed about 15 rows up the Orange Level stands and put the Rough Riders up, 6-2.

"He hit .424 in the regular season, but that was the third-lowest on our (starting nine)," Roosevelt coach Kerry Higa said of Kimura, who bats sixth. "But we knew he had a sweet swing; for him it's just a matter of relaxing and having confidence. And that's the thing about this team — you never know who's going to step up. Our Nos. 6-7 batters could be our No. 3 batter on any day, and we've had about 10 names (appear) in the paper."

Kimura had two home runs in the regular season, both at hitter-friendly Stevenson Middle School field. Both homers yesterday came on first pitches, the first on a curve and the second a fastball.

"I couldn't let those (pitches) go," Kimura said. "I didn't know I was going to hit home runs, because I wasn't hitting good in practice this week."

Kimura went the seven-inning distance with four strikeouts and three walks. He gave up one run in the third on a wild pitch, another in the fourth on Ricky Takushi's RBI single and two in the seventh on sacrifice flies by Brian Tucker-Salas and Aaron Powell.

Kailua's Jason Moore pitched five strong innings, and ace Kamaile Santos recorded the final six outs to pick up the save.

The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Trey Brown's RBI double, and they led 2-0 in the second after Brian Uranaka's run-scoring single.

Mililani also put runners on third base in four of the last five innings, including the final three, but could not cash in.

Kailua will be making its third straight appearance in the championship game.
