STATE TRACK & FIELD
New champion? Lauran Dignam, a potential gold-medal winner in five events, has positioned Iolani to contend for its first state girls track and field championship tonight.
The first running event of the Island Movers State Boys and Girls championships will start at 5:40 p.m. at Mililani High School stadium.
Dignam qualified first in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes in Thursday's trials and helped Iolani qualify first in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. She is considered a threat to break records in the 100 and 200.
Punahou has won 26 of the previous 35 girls' championships, including the last six. The Buffanblu will have to call on all of their vaunted depth to overcome Dignam and Iolani tonight.
Punahou's Todd Iacovelli broke the boys' meet record in the 1,500 on Thursday with a time of 4 minutes, 5.79 seconds and intends to obliterate the 3,000-meter record of 9:05.29 tonight. He ran a 8:33.36, best ever by a Hawai'i prep, at Stanford on March 29.
GIRLS WATER POLO
Buffanblu again: Punahou, the only girls water polo champion the Interscholastic League of Honolulu has ever known, defeated Iolani, 15-4, last night to win its sixth straight ILH title.
The final games of the ILH tournament were played at Kamehameha. Kamehameha beat Pac-Five, 8-6, for third place.
Two-time ILH Player of the Year Anne Richardson led Punahou with four goals. "She played a good all-around defensive game and passing game, too," Punahou coach Ken Smith said.
Punahou beat Iolani twice previously, 17-3 and 13-4, en route to an 8-0 ILH record and 16-2 overall record this season.
