BYUH men, women advance to semifinals

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i Pacific's men may have lost yesterday, but not without a fight.

The Sea Warriors (15-3) fell to top-ranked Brigham Young University-Hawai'i (27-1), 5-4, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA II National Tennis Championship in Kansas City, Mo.

The Seasider women (27-0) also advanced to the semifinals after quickly putting away Abilene Christian, 5-0, yesterday.

But the all-Hawai'i men's quarterfinal proved to be the highlight of the tournament so far.

The Seasiders trailed 2-1 after the doubles matches. HPU's No. 1 pair Mikael Maatta and Jan Tribler defeated BYUH's top partners Jan Krejci and Peter Madarassay, 8-5, shifting momentum toward HPU.

In singles play, the Sea Warriors took an early 4-2 lead, highlighted by Maatta's straight-set victory over top-ranked Krejci, 6-4, 6-3. It was Krejci's first dual-match loss of the season at No. 1 singles.

But the Seasiders rallied from behind to win the final three singles to secure the win.

BYUH's Hong Soon Park and Hong Tae Kim not only provided the only doubles win for the Seasiders, but they both won their singles matches as well.

Poauda Ndiaye, who returned to BYUH's lineup, defeated Stefan Pampulov, 7-6 (5), 7-5, to even the score. And Park's win over Matey Pampulov, 7-5, 6-0, 6-3, sealed the victory.

"This was a very satisfying win in a hard fought battle between what I consider to be the top two teams in the country," BYUH head coach David Porter said. "It's unfortunate that Hawai'i Pacific wasn't seeded higher so this match could have been in the semifinals or finals of the tournament."
