WCCC inmates mark Kids Day

Thanks to donations from hundreds of state employees, inmates at the Women's Community Correctional Center will be able to give their children a book and toy at a Kids Day event today at the facility.

Employees donated books and toys for Keiki Hale, a children's visit room recently opened at WCCC in Kailua.

"The outpouring of support for Keiki Hale has been tremendous," said Gov. Ben Cayetano. "Employees from 10 state departments gave over 2,200 books, toys and stuffed animals so that mothers and their children could enjoy their special time together."

About 200 children are expected to attend the event.

Car crash victim aided by passers-by

Police reported a one-car crash yesterday morning in Punalu'u in which the driver might have died had it not been for the actions of passing motorists.

The crash occurred just past midnight when an unidentified 18-year-old male was driving northbound in a 1990 Honda Accord.

Near Kamehameha Highway and Punalu'u Valley Road, the car drifted onto the right highway shoulder, flew off a sand mound and landed upside down in a pond of backup water from the valley.

The driver was trapped inside the car under water for about five minutes before passers-by were able to pull him from the vehicle. He was taken by helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition yesterday.

Golfer listed in critical condition

A 63-year-old man impaled by a golf course fence railing Friday was in critical condition at The Queen's Medical Center last night, a nursing supervisor said.

The man was injured as he was riding in a golf cart at New 'Ewa Beach Golf Course. The driver lost control and struck a fence at about 6 p.m. The rusty top rail on the fence, a pole about 1 to 1 1/2 inches in diameter, broke off and speared the passenger's stomach.

The man was airlifted to Queen's in critical condition. He underwent emergency surgery, and was listed in guarded condition late Friday. The updated report indicates his condition worsened.

City picks up items damaged by storm

Crews and equipment from the city's bulky item pickup division are being mobilized to remove large items damaged in the recent storm.

"Damaged personal property caused by the heavy rains, or items such as tires, abandoned water heaters and miscellaneous appliances that may have floated onto properties during the storm should be removed," city Managing Director Ben Lee said. "City crews are available to pick up these items, provided that they are placed at curbside."

City crews cannot enter private property to remove items. Residents interested in requesting the pickups — which do not apply to damaged, abandoned or derelict vehicles — can call the following city yards: Waialua, 637-4795; La'ie, 293-5657; Kane'ohe, 247-3553; and Kailua, 262-8346.
