Driver critically hurt in Maui crash

The driver in a one-car crash last night in Wailuku remained in critical condition today while his passenger was upgraded to guarded condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The accident was reported at 10:25 p.m. on Kahekili Highway, about a half mile south of Waiehu Beach Road, after the driver of a blue 1991 Nissan two-door sedan heading south collided with a utility pole on the highway's west shoulder.

The driver, identified as Giovanni G. Cabbat, 18, of Wailuku, was ejected from the car. Police identified the passenger as Desmond Pulgados, 19.

Police had not determined this morning whether speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the accident.

Roadway shooting victim sought

Police are looking for the victim in a case late last night in which, a witness said, someone in a white truck fired a shot into a black truck while both were stopped at an 'Ewa Beach intersection.

The white truck was found just after midnight and its occupants, a 37-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, were arrested on suspicion of reckless endangering.

The witness told police that the black truck was in pursuit and cut off the white truck at Fort Weaver Road and Makule Road at about 10:10 p.m. The witness said someone in the white truck fired a handgun at the black truck, which then fled and was not found.

Boy pulled from whirlpool, revived

A 2-year-old boy was pulled from a Waikiki hotel whirlpool yesterday and was revived by a visiting doctor from Canada who performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Fire rescuers were called after 3:35 p.m., when the boy was pulled from the water at Royal Garden at Waikiki. Fire department Capt. Kenison Tejada said it wasn't known how the child got in the water.

The doctor had detected a pulse and when fire paramedics tried to apply an oxygen mask, the child began to cry.

He was taken to Kapi'olani Medical Center, where his condition wasn't available this morning. A hospital spokeswoman said he was not in the intensive-care unit.

Armed robber of store hunted

Police are looking for an armed robber who held up the Radio Shack on North School Street Saturday night.

A man, who was wearing a bandanna over his face and a maroon hooded jacket and dark pants entered the store, 1620 N. School St., at 8:45 p.m. He took merchandise from behind the counter and fled.

Witnesses also described him as slim and having a dark complexion.

Help in finding fugitive requested

Police and state sheriffs are asking for the public's help in finding Ryan Lee Martin, a fugitive wanted for a parole revocation warrant for previous convictions, including robbery, burglary, auto theft and kidnapping.

Martin, 24, was last known to live in the 3500 block of Salt Lake Boulevard, police said. He is being sought in connection with burglaries and auto thefts in Pearl City, Kailihi and Kahala and is considered dangerous.

He is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 130 pounds and with a medium build. He has brown eyes, a medium complexion, black hair worn in a ponytail and a mustache.
