Man still critical after golf accident

A 63-year-old Waipahu man impaled by a golf course fence railing Friday remained in critical condition at The Queen's Medical Center yesterday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The man was injured as he was riding in a golf cart at New 'Ewa Beach Golf Course. The driver lost control and struck a fence at about 6 p.m. The rusty top rail on the fence, a pole about 1 to 1 1/2 inches in diameter, broke off and speared the passenger's stomach.

The man was airlifted to Queen's in critical condition where he underwent emergency surgery.

The manager of the golf course, Ikuyo Nitta, said the two golfers had just played in the Hawaii Air Cargo shotgun golf tournament and were riding back to the clubhouse.

Nitta said she didn't know what caused the accident that occurred off the cart path. She said the scene was not wet or hilly, and she said the golf carts are serviced everyday.

She said private investigators were examining the golf cart and the accident scene, which is now off-limits.
