Hale'iwa law now on books

A bill to allow up to two drive-throughs in historic Hale'iwa became law last week without the mayor's signature, ending a legal fight that has divided the community for years.

The bill allows an existing drive-through at the McDonald's fast-food restaurant and the construction of one more.

Hale'iwa is in a special-design district that banned drive-throughs to preserve the historic rural character of the North Shore town.

But McDonald's opened a drive-through in 1997 after receiving permission from the city in a variance.

Last month the Honolulu City Council upheld the variance by approving the bill.

Keiki essays to go into capsule

Kamiloiki and Koko Head elementary schools have been asked to submit essays to be placed into the time capsule that will be buried near the new community identification sign at the corner of Hawai'i Kai Drive and Kalaniana'ole Highway.

Students are asked to write an essay about what Hawai'i Kai will look like 50 years from now, or "Hawai'i Kai Star Date 2052."

Essays should be no longer than one page and are due Friday. Kamiloiki will award prizes for the top three essays, which will be included in the time capsule along with a photo of each author.

For more information, call the school at 397-5800 or 397-5811.
