Rain soaks Maui County

WAILUKU, Maui — After missing out on the wet weather that drenched most of the island chain last week, Maui County received a good soaking yesterday.

A thunderstorm rattled Maui early yesterday morning, and rain continued to fall throughout the day. More than 4 inches of rain was measured in Lana'i City during the 24 hours that ended at 2 p.m., while Kaunakakai had 2 inches during that period. On Maui, 1.6 inches fell over Wailuku, 2.7 in 'Ulupalakua, and nearly 2 inches in Mahinahina.

A flash-flood watch for the county was to remain in effect until 4 this morning.

On O'ahu, a flash-flood watch was canceled yesterday afternoon. Rainfall totals ranged from 1.63 inches in Hawai'i Kai to an inch in Moanalua.

The National Weather Service forecast blue skies today for O'ahu and Kaua'i, with tradewinds to return tomorrow.

Maui County and the Big Island were expected to experience cloudiness and leftover showers today, with clearing by tomorrow.
