Questions that test your UH acumen

By Ferd Lewis

Because this is final exam week for University of Hawai'i student-athletes, it seems only fitting that their followers, the student-athlete fans, should be tested, too.

So, grab a pencil and measure your knowledge on some of the ins and outs of this memorable school year in sports.

You may correct your own paper, but if you miss more than two questions, consider yourself on academic probation in the fall.

• 1. The sticking point in negotiations to renew the contract of men's basketball coach Riley Wallace has been:

(a) Incentives.

(b) His demand for more games against Tulsa.

(c) Insistence upon having a Golden Corral franchise in the Stan Sheriff Center.

• 2. When UH won the NCAA men's volleyball title, Mike Wilton said:

(a) "I'm going to Disneyland!"

(b) "I'm going to BYU!"

(c) "President Dobelle is getting me a new contract!"

(d) "Warm up the trolley!"

• 3. The most feared UH performer this year was:

(a) Nick Rolovich, football.

(b) Costas Theocharidis, men's volleyball.

(c) Kim Willoughby, women's volleyball.

(d) Predrag Savovic, men's basketball.

(e) Vili Fehoko, the mascot.

• 4. After UH beat UCLA in volleyball, Bruins coach Al Scates whined: "They haven't seen our game plan — the one I'll use in the playoffs. That's when it really matters."

Now that the season has ended without them meeting in the playoffs, what was Scates' plan?

(a) Call the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

(b) Get UH overconfident for next year.

(c) Get on the golf course first.

• 5. After seven previous seasons without a UH kickoff return for a touchdown, who guaranteed "a (touchdown) is gonna happen this year. You can quote me on that."

(a) Nostradamus.

(b) The Psychic Network.

(c) Lee Corso.

(d) Rich Miano.

• 6. The most talked-about UH kick this football season was:

(a) Justin Ayat's 55-yard field goal vs. Tulsa.

(b) Mat McBriar's 69-yard punt vs. Tulsa.

(c) None of the above.

Answers: 1. (a) but the other two would sure sweeten the deal. 2. All are acceptable. 3. Normally, (a), (b), (c) or (d), but never overlook a man who carries a spear. 4. (b). 5. (d). 6. (c) Craig Stutzmann's "punt" into the stands for a 15-yard penalty vs. BYU.
