Kapalua's King wins golf event

Advertiser Staff

Jerry King of Kapalua Golf Club won the Verizon Hawai'i Hall of Fame Championship at The Plantation Course at Kapalua yesterday and he didn't even swing a club.

King's first-round score of 4-under 69 stood up when rain canceled the final round.

Brian Sasada of Makena Golf Club finished second at 71. Kevin Hayashi and Beau Yokomoto, both of Pearl Country Club, tied for third at 72.

SURFING

• Irons advances: Kaua'i's Andy Irons continued to prove his worth as the world's No. 1-ranked surfer by advancing to the quarterfinals of the Billabong Pro Teahupoo in Tahiti yesterday.

In waves of 4 to 5 feet, Irons won two heats yesterday, defeating Tahiti's Heimata Carroll in the third round, and then Australian Shane Powell in the fourth round.

Two other Hawai'i surfers — Shane Dorian and Kalani Robb — won third-round heats while Hawai'i's Sunny Garcia and Conan Hayes were eliminated in the third round.
