The Colorado Rockies yesterday placed outfielder Benny Agbayani on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring and recalled right-hander Denny Stark from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Agbayani, a former St. Louis School and Hawai'i Pacific University standout, is batting .217 (15-for-69) in 27 games. He has two homers and 10 RBIs with five walks and 23 strikeouts.

Agbayani was acquired from the New York Mets during the offseason.

Stark was 1-2 with a 3.82 ERA in seven starts at Colorado Springs.

RETIREMENT

Canseco calls it quits: Former AL MVP Jose Canseco announced his retirement yesterday, 38 home runs shy of the 500 mark he hoped to reach to bolster his Hall of Fame chances.

Canseco, 37, was cut by Montreal in spring training and signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox April 18. He was hitting .172 with five homers and nine RBIs in 18 games at Triple-A Charlotte.

Canseco's decision leaves him with 462 home runs, 22nd on the career list. A career .266 hitter, Canseco finishes with 1,407 RBIs in 1,887 games with seven teams.

He was named AL MVP with Oakland in 1988.

RED SOX

No surgery for Ramirez: Boston outfielder Manny Ramirez won't need surgery on his broken left index finger, though he's still expected to be out 4-6 weeks, team doctor Bill Morgan said.

Ramirez, who leads the major leagues with a .372 batting average, was injured during Saturday's game in Seattle while sliding into home plate.

Morgan said Sunday that Ramirez would be sidelined until the end of June, and while a CT scan yesterday showed the break wasn't significantly displaced and won't require surgery, the estimated rehabilitation time remains the same.

CUBS

Mahomes up, Gonzalez down: Chicago called up pitcher Pat Mahomes from Triple-A Iowa, put shortstop Alex Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list and transferred pitcher Donovan Osborne to the 60-day disabled list yesterday.
