Depontes is doubles trouble for UMass foes

Jafra Depontes (Kamehameha '00, of Kailua-Kona) has won 43 doubles matches in her first two tennis seasons, sixth most ever at University of Massachusetts.

Depontes has been chosen on the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team both years.

She won 13 of her last 14 doubles matches this season with partner Stephanie Price of Missouri, and was 15-7 overall at Nos. 1 and 2.

Depontes has 34 career singles victories and was 10-13 this year at Nos. 1, 2 and 3.

Freshman Tracie Chong (Iolani '01, of Hawai'i Kai) helped the Rebels set a school record with a .833 winning percentage (20 wins, 4 losses).

Chong, last year's Hawai'i high school girls singles champion, finished 24-9 in singles, playing No. 4.

GOLF

• Pepperdine (Calif.)

Freshman Rachel Kyono, Hawai'i's high school girls champion last year for Kaua'i High, helped the Waves tie with UCLA for the NCAA West Regional championship last weekend. Kyono shot 1-over-par 73 on the final day and 8-over 224 for the three-day regional at Stanford.

The 72-hole national championships start Tuesday in Auburn, Wash.

VOLLEYBALL

• Minnesota

Lindsey Berg (Punahou '98, of Manoa) yesterday was named to the all-star first team for the inaugural season of United States Professional Volleyball.

Earlier, Berg was honored as USPV's best server and best setter. She led the new league in aces (0.6 per game) and assists (11.4 per game). She joined the Minnesota Chill shortly after graduation from Minnesota in 3 1/2 years and helped the Chill win the first USPV championship.

• Princeton (N.J.)

Two of the middle hitters ahead of him graduate, so 6-foot-5 freshman Sean Vitousek (Hawai'i Prep '01, of Kamuela) will have a good shot at starting next season, team spokeswoman Cathy Lawton said.

Vitousek played in only 27 games this season, but he got 10 kills and six blocks in a victory over Puerto Rico-Bayamon.

Jarrett Walters, a 6-4 middle hitter from Honolulu, also was on the squad
