Yesterday's quarterfinals of the Hawaiian Airline Girls State Basketball Championship Tournament featured the No. 1 seed surviving a scare by three points, the No. 2 seed losing by 21 points to a team that finished third in its league, and an upstart No. 3 seed coming within minutes of knocking off perennial power Punahou.

The aftermath is this: Three of the four semifinalists coming from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, and all four from O'ahu.

Punahou 46, Konawaena 38: The Buffanblu scored the final 12 points of the game to rally past the upstart Wildcats.

Punahou did not get to this point easily, having to match the Wildcats basket-for-basket at a frantic pace for the first three periods. In the fourth quarter, Konawaena took a 38-34 lead with 4:30 remaining on Keala Kaupu's layup. That, however, would be the Wildcats' final points.

"We had layups that wouldn't go in," Konawaena coach Bobbie Awa said. "We couldn't buy a basket."

The Buffanblu, meanwhile, cut the lead to 38-37 on Becky Hogue's layup and free throw with three minutes remaining. They took a 39-38 lead on freshman Christine Takara's free throws with 1:37 left. Elyse Umeda and Rachel Kane combined for four free throws in the next minute, and Umeda's free throws with 15 seconds remaining gave Punahou a 45-38 lead.

Kane finished with 14 points and six rebounds to lead the Buffanblu, and Umeda added 10 points, five rebounds and five steals. Jessica Hanato led the Wildcats with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Nancy Hoist added 10 points and nine rebounds.
