Hollywood personality excels on the green

PERSONALITIES: Actor Don Johnson, star of TV's "Miami Vice" and "Nash Bridges," and such films as "Tin Cup" and "The Hot Spot," has been ensconced at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hawaii. He golfed with Gov. Ben Cayetano last week at the Wai'alae golf course, and observers such as adman Marty Schiller were amazed that Johnson was as good as the golf mentor he played in the "Cup" film starring Kevin Costner. ...

With the release of her film "Tuxedo" coming in August, actress Jennifer Love Hewitt has been soaking up the Maui fun and sun, lunching at the Hula Grill at Whaler's Village in Ka'anapali. ...

Retired sumotori Konishiki is on a home visit, mainly to promote his upcoming second CD, "Simply for Sale" (as in Salevaa Atisanoe), which is due in June. He raps through a menu of urban vibes. ...

And fellow retired sumotori Akebono (Chad Rowan) has been spending time on the beaches of Waimanalo with friend Kurt Kipapa, primarily for a taping of an upcoming segment of Oceanic 16's "Local Kine Grindz." TV hosts and culinary explorers Bruddah Sam and Lina Girl sample shrimp Creole, blackened ahi with papaya salsa, and jambalaya, created by chef Dutch O'Neil, who earlier worked with Sam Choy but is a personal chef whose work takes him all over the globe. Kipapa, lead voice for Na Kane Nui, performs "Waimanalo Blues" on the show. ...

BITS 'N' PIECES: Honolulu comedian Jaz Kaner is back home and will be in action tonight, sharing a stand-up bill with Bo Irvine at the Emporium Lounge in Waimalu. "Bo and I are just back from Johnston Island, where we had a great show — but we couldn't hear the laughter because of the gas masks," said Kaner, with tongue in cheek. ...

It was a family affair when pianist Ginny Tiu performed with guitarist-singer John Valentine for Mother's Day at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider Hotel. Ginny's sister, first lady Vicky Cayetano, showed up with her husband and her parents, William and Pat Tiu, plus several other clan members. Dad was the Tiu sisters' original piano teacher and shepherded their eventual appearance on TV's Ed Sullivan show. ...

Hula dancer Carmen Haugen was among those excited to see Thai Princess Ubolratana Mahidol during the royal's recent visit. It was nearly 25 years ago that Haugen and Iwalani Aiu were guests of the royal Thai family to dance for Queen Sirikit's 45th birthday, and the princess visited Haugen and Aiu in their penthouse suites to sing for them the tune her father, the king, had written for his wife. Memories linger for the local women who choreographed the tune, which later was performed at a bash at the royal palace in Bangkok. ...

RADIO ROULETTE: With KTUH under new management, there have been changes. DJ Kavet, who was doing the Light Sleeperz show from 6 p.m. to midnight, is pau after last night's broadcast. And at KQMQ-FM, Jeff Kino exited the morning drive slot a couple of weeks back. ...

Singer Emma Veary will be saluted at 3 p.m. Sunday on Hawai'i Public Radio's KIPO (89.3 FM) and KIFO (1370 AM), in Keith Haugen's weekly show. The spotlight has been on living treasures, with similar tributes planned for Noelani Mahoe, Raymond Kane, John Keawe, Marlene Sai, Dennis Kamakahi, Ozzie Kotani, Ledward Ka'apana and Palani Vaughan. ...
