Clinton in Hawai'i en route to Asia

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Gov. Ben Cayetano met last night with former President Bill Clinton, who arrived in Honolulu for a two-day stopover before heading a diplomatic delegation to East Timor.

Jackie Kido, Cayetano's director of communications, confirmed last night's meeting but did not have any details.

Clinton is staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. No public appearances or political events were scheduled for him before he leaves Hawai'i tomorrow.

Today, Clinton is scheduled to play a round of golf with Cayetano. He will dine with the Cayetanos tonight at Washington Place.

Clinton is traveling to Monday's independence celebration for East Timor.

President Bush named Clinton to head a delegation representing the United States at the inauguration of East Timor President-elect Xanana Gusmao.

East Timor is a former Indonesian territory that separated from Jakarta in 1999, during Clinton's term. It will become the world's newest nation Monday when U.N. administrators leave. The world body has been governing the country since it voted for independence from Indonesia in 1999.
