UH's Smith runs off with WAC 10,000 title

SMITH: Won 10,000 with a time of 36:25.92

McGUIRE-TURCOTTE: Qualifies for 800 finals
University of Hawai'i senior Cheryl Smith successfully defended her 10,000-meter title yesterday at the Western Athletic Conference Track and Field championships at the Rice University's Track/ Soccer Stadium in Houston.

Smith won in 36 minutes, 25.92 seconds. Tulsa's Charlotte Sanderson was second in 36:40.32.

Rainbow Wahine senior Casey McGuire-Turcotte qualified for the WAC finals with the fourth best time overall in the 800-meter run with a 2:11.22. Tulsa's Monica Joannes had the fastest 800-meter qualifying time in 2:09.96. The final is today.

With a day of competition remaining, Nevada leads with 44 points.

Fresno State is in second with 31 points and Rice is in third with 28.

Hawai'i is in eighth place out of nine teams, with 11 points, trailed by Texas-El Paso with eight.
